Ladakh Set To Expand With Five New Districts, Enhancing Governance And Services, Announces Home Ministry

In a major administrative overhaul, the Union Territory of Ladakh will soon see the creation of five new districts, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday. This move, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a more developed and prosperous Ladakh, aims to bring governance and benefits closer to the people in this remote and strategic region.

Ladakh To Get Five New Districts

Changthang, Zanskar, Drass, Sham, and Nubra are the five new districts that will change Ladakh’s administrative structure. With this expansion, Ladakh’s two existing districts—Leh and Kargil—will become the region’s seventh district altogether.

At the moment, Leh and Kargil, each with an independent district council, split up the administration of Ladakh. Leh is further divided into six sub-divisions, while Kargil is divided into four. The introduction of the new districts is expected to streamline administrative processes. According to  will also ensure that development initiatives reach even the most remote areas of this high-altitude region.

Minister Shah highlighted the significance of this decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He stated, “In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.”
