Checking your pockets and realising that you forgot your phone somewhere feels nothing less than a horror movie. It can be extremely anxiety-invoking given the important details about one’s financial and personal life that are stored in the phone. A woman recently forgot her phone in a cab. When she managed to get the driver’s number and call him back, he had already left.

In the transcript of the conversation that went viral on Chinese social media, the driver is heard telling the woman that he is already a long way away from the place where he dropped her off. He said that he’d have to drive around 50 kilometres just to return her cell phone. When the woman insisted that he come back, he demanded CN¥100 to drive all the way.

However, the woman refused and started yelling at him. The driver, too, got angry and said that he had to pay money for petrol as well. The woman then accused him of stealing her phone at which point the driver angrily asked her to collect her phone from a police station.

The woman drew a lot of criticism for the tone she used with the driver, for refusing to pay him and for accusing the driver of stealing her phone. These criticisms of the woman are understandable and even well-placed. But it is important to ask if the driver’s reaction was justified. If something as important as a cell phone is lost, it is understandable that the person may be panicking.

Under such circumstances, had the driver been kinder or more understanding, it is likely that the woman wouldn’t have reacted in the harsh way that she did. This is not to say that the woman’s reprehensible behaviour towards the driver was justified. But maybe if both parties had acted more calmly, the outcome of the situation would have been different.
