Two-time Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh breathed his last breath in Delhi on Thursday. From his governance and economic reforms to his diplomacy, his legacy is unmatchable. His contribution towards India’s economic liberalisation is something he will be remembered forever. And as we remember this greatness, we can’t help but remember the few times he gave us a peek into his personal life and talked about his simple food preferences.

Much like his simple and humble demeanour, he enjoyed eating simple dishes. He liked curd rice and kadhi chawal–staple North Indian foods. According to Times Now, Dr Manmohan Singh followed his eating habits while travelling. He had diabetes and avoided all sorts of desserts because of this. His wife, Gursharan Kaur, made sure to watch his diet because of his health conditions.

Dr Manmohan Singh was a vegetarian. In an old interview, he revealed that he does not like to impose his vegetarianism on others but he does believe that a “vegetarian diet is superior to diets laced with meat.” However, during a trip to Bangladesh, he was willing to break his all-vegetarian diet to try hilsa fish, a popular Bengali delicacy that is enjoyed by people in India as well. He said he was willing to make an exception for it because he had heard a lot about the “delicious dish of hilsa fish.”
