It’s like travelling back in time to visit Phugtal Gompa, where you can get a unique look at a way of life that hasn’t changed much in generations. The origins date back to the early 12th century, making it one of the oldest monasteries in the region. For those who are ready to go off the main road, this old monastery, carved into the side of a cliff, offers a singular and profound experience. Perched precariously on the edge of a cliff, Phugtal Gompa is a sight to behold. The structure blends seamlessly with the rugged terrain, appearing almost as if it has grown organically out of the mountain.
Approximately seventy monks who live a life of prayer, study, and meditation reside at Phugtal Gompa. The tranquil surroundings, which offer a dramatic contrast to the rush and bustle of contemporary life, frequently astound visitors. The monastery is very important both historically and culturally. The most striking feature is the central cave, which serves as the main prayer hall. Inside, one finds ancient murals. Visitors can enjoy a visual feast as the murals and frescoes that cover the walls represent scenes from Buddhist scriptures and the history of the monastery. Ancient literature and manuscripts, some of which are rare and priceless, are kept in the monastery library.

Reaching Phugtal Gompa is an adventure in itself. The monastery is located in the remote Lungnak Valley of the Zanskar region. Accessible only by foot, travellers hike across rocky terrain, traverse suspension bridges, and follow meandering trails alongside the Lungnak River. Though the route can be difficult, particularly for those who are not used to high-altitude trekking, it is a very rewarding experience because of the beautiful surroundings and the excitement of finding the secret monastery.
This arduous journey is a pilgrimage for many. The isolation of Phugtal Gompa ensures that only the most dedicated and spiritually inclined individuals undertake the journey. From June to September, when the weather is often pleasant and the trekking pathways are accessible, is the best time to visit Phugtal Gompa.
