When most people think of visiting Japan, they expect to dive into the world of sushi, ramen, and tempura, the pillars of Japanese cuisine. But tucked away in Kyoto is a delightful surprise for those willing to venture beyond the usual—Tadka, a South Indian restaurant that can’t be missed. What’s even more surprising is that this restaurant, which serves authentic South Indian meals, is run and operated by Japanese locals who are incredibly passionate about the cuisine and culture of South India.
Tadka, A Japanese Take On South Indian Flavours
The creator of Tadka is Chef Okogi Dai, a Japanese foodie who was fascinated with South India’s varied cuisine. He travels twice a year to Chennai, where he learns new recipes and immerses himself in the local cuisine. It’s this dedication to authenticity that led to the opening of Tadka in Kyoto in 2012. As the restaurant’s popularity grew, so did its vision.
In December 2021, the team opened Tadka 2—a larger, more refined space on the bustling Oshikoji Street. Both Tadka locations provide unique dining experiences. Tadka 1 offers a more relaxed, diner-style setting for lunch, while Tadka 2 offers a slightly more upscale setting ideal for a more relaxed dinner.
Tadka 1 focuses on South Indian “meals,” which are usually small dishes presented on a metal plate or banana leaf. These meals provide a full and satisfying experience, making them perfect for people who are constantly on the go. Since each dish is made with organic, in-season vegetables, the menu is regularly updated to reflect what is available.
At Tadka 2, you’ll find a more sophisticated setting with a menu perfected by Chef Manikandan, a culinary expert from South India. Here, the focus is on showcasing the incredible diversity of South Indian cuisine. Whether it’s the spicy curries of Tamil Nadu or the tangy flavours of Andhra Pradesh, Tadka 2 offers a taste of the whole spectrum of South India.

The Unique Dining Experience In Kyoto
Tadka’s charm lies in how it blends the authenticity of South Indian meals with the delicate sensibilities of Japanese hospitality. But beyond just food, the space itself is a reflection of the care and attention that goes into every detail—whether it’s the colourful, inviting decor, the upbeat yet comfortable atmosphere, or the genuine warmth with which you’re treated.
For anyone who is tired of the typical Japanese culinary offerings or is looking to try something new, Tadka is an absolute must-visit. It’s a place where you can experience the true heart of South India, brought to life by a team of Japanese chefs who have travelled far and wide to perfect every dish. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty lunch or an adventurous dinner with natural wines, Tadka is all you need.
So, if you’re heading to Kyoto, indulge in a South Indian food experience unlike any other.
