A Lufthansa flight en route from Frankfurt to Hyderabad was forced to make a mid-air U-turn and return to Germany after a bomb threat was reported onboard. Despite the aircraft entering Indian airspace, it was denied landing permission, prompting the airline to divert the flight back to its origin. The incident occurred on 15 June and involved Lufthansa’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft, operating as Flight LH752.

Lufthansa Hyderabad Flight Bomb Threat Disrupts India-Bound Route

Lufthansa received the bomb threat while the flight was already in the Indian airspace, according to Hindustan Times. The flight crew immediately activated aviation safety protocols and coordinated with relevant authorities. The situation became more complicated when officials confirmed that Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport had not granted landing permission to the aircraft.

With no clearance to land and an active threat onboard, Lufthansa decided to reroute the aircraft back to Frankfurt. The airline prioritised passenger and crew safety and opted not to risk continuing towards Indian territory without official approval.

No Landing Clearance Added To Mid-Air Crisis

As reported by Mint, the lack of landing clearance from Indian aviation authorities played a crucial role in the flight’s diversion. Despite the aircraft being well within Indian airspace, it could not proceed to land in Hyderabad. Landing permissions are a critical regulatory requirement, and without them, no international carrier can touch down at an Indian airport, even in emergencies.

This regulatory hurdle, combined with the bomb scare, triggered an immediate reassessment of the route, and the flight reversed course. The aircraft eventually landed safely at Frankfurt Airport, where the crew disembarked all passengers and security teams conducted thorough checks. They found no suspicious items and confirmed that everyone onboard was safe.

A full investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the bomb threat and assess how the lapse in landing permissions occurred. Aviation authorities in both Germany and India are expected to coordinate as part of the inquiry.
