According to Bloomberg, airlines are still battling to keep up a year after air traffic roared back from epidemic lows, overloading the system with airport mayhem and luggage pileups. Recently, bags piled up from Newark Liberty to Los Angeles International last month after storms disrupted flight schedules in the northeast US. 10,000 luggage were lost in one day at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

Additionally, weather-related disruptions, flight delays, and cancellations can further increase the likelihood of baggage getting misplaced or delayed.

The loss of baggage can have a profound impact on travellers, both practically and emotionally. First and foremost, the inconvenience of being without personal belongings, essential items, and valuables can disrupt travel plans and cause considerable stress. Travellers may find themselves without appropriate clothing, medication, or important documents needed for their trip.

Meanwhile, passengers are increasingly equipping themselves with Bluetooth devices, revealing a shaky bag-handling system that is frequently a step behind consumers — and putting pressure on the industry to keep up. When faced with lost baggage, travellers are often required to engage in a tedious and time-consuming process to retrieve their belongings.

Airlines usually track baggage using a barcode system, which helps locate misplaced items. However, the recovery process can be lengthy, often involving coordination between multiple airports and airlines.

According to Bloomberg,  the industry is also developing a strategy to integrate trackers into current systems. They are seeking support from technology businesses. One problem is developing a standard for airlines and device makers to use as a starting point for future solutions.

Lost baggage is an unfortunate reality of modern travel, capable of turning the excitement of a journey into a nightmare. The reasons behind lost luggage are multifaceted, ranging from logistical challenges to human errors.
