Madurai airport is one of the most important airports in the country. Connecting the city of Madurai to multiple domestic destinations, it is regarded as the 20th busiest airport in the country. And recently, in a post by the Airport Authority of India on X, it was revealed that the airport will be directly connected to the Mumbai Airport with Air India Express flights.
Air India Express To Fly Directly From Madurai To Mumbai
Air India Express has now introduced direct flights from Madurai Airport (IXM) to the Mumbai Airport. With the introduction of this new flight service, it’s evident that the airport is emerging as a dynamic one. However, it’s worth noting that this is not a new airport. Yes, the Madurai Airport was established back in 1957. In service for over 60 years, this airport has two adjacent terminals. In fact, this is a customs airport that serves Madurai and Southern districts, in the state of Tamil Nadu. Not to mention, it’s just 12 km from the Madurai Railway Junction.
There Are Plans To Redevelop The Airport
Spread across a whopping 17,600 sq. m, the airport also inaugurated the New Integrated terminal building, recently. Yes, and the passenger footfall is rapidly increasing at the airport, which has also called for the development and re-transformation of the airport. As mentioned previously, the Airport Authority of India has plans to remodel and develop the airport premises. The construction plan extends to the installation of departure entry gates, entry gates dedicated to airport staff, VIP check-in encounters to be increased to 28, and even some restructuring of the premises. With the redevelopment in place, the airport capacity during the rush hour will increase to 2600 flyers.

- As it happens, the airport currently handles over 1,25,000 passengers per month on its domestic network.
- The airport connects to major Indian metros like Bangalore, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.
- It also has connections to Tier II cities, like Tirupati and Rajahmundry.
- The airport currently has a seating capacity of 250+250 and has 20 immigration counters, according to the information on its website.
- There are 3+1 baggage conveyors and a CISF staff strength of 216.
- The airport is connected to international cities, like Columbo, Dubai, and Singapore.
- With a runway of 7,500 feet, there are two parallel taxiways.
With the airport already offering a multitude of facilities for travellers, it is going to be developed soon. As mentioned above, soon the development will also see the installation of X-BIS machines at both the domestic and international security hold areas.
