6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Peru; 1 Dead & 36 Severely Injured

A powerful earthquake struck Peru on Sunday, and it left one person dead and 36 others injured. The earthquake also triggered landslides and measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located approximately 30 kilometres from Callao, a major port city near the capital Lima.

A strong earthquake rattled Peru on June 15, with different monitoring agencies reporting varying magnitudes. The National Seismological Centre of Peru measured the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was reported about 30 kilometres from Callao. In contrast, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly lower magnitude of 5.6. Peru authorities have confirmed that one person was killed and several were injured due to the earthquake.

Powerful Earthquake Jolts Peru

According to Hindustan Times, the strong earthquake in Peru resulted in the death of one man in Lima. The man was crushed when a wall collapsed onto his vehicle after the quake jolted the area. Several landslides were reported in various parts of Lima, underscoring the immediate impact of the earthquake. Around 36 people have been reported injured because of the earthquake and its aftermath.

As per reports, the earthquake occurred at 11:35 AM (local time) in Peru. The tremor disrupted daily life in Lima, including the suspension of a major football match that was in progress at the time. However, authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the coastal region.

Quake Causes Devastation

As per the visuals surfacing on social media, the earthquake in Peru caused major devastation, including the collapsing of big structures, and damage to roads, and some school buildings. It is to be noted that Peru is no stranger to seismic activities, thanks to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Over the years, Peru has experienced several devastating earthquakes. One of the most recent ones was the 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the Amazon region in 2021, which injured 12 people and destroyed over 70 homes.
