In August 2024, a 35-foot statue of Shivaji Maharaj collapsed, less than eight months after its installation. The incident sparked a huge outrage, and an FIR was also filed against Jaydeep Apte, who had sculpted the statue. Following the unfortunate incident, the state government ordered the installation of another statue at the same place.

On May 11, in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a new 91-foot-tall statue of Shivaji Maharaj was unveiled at the same spot. The statue is 91 feet high and has been placed on a 10-foot pedestal.

Speaking about the new statue to the media, CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the statue will survive for at least 100 years in any environment. He emphasised that “adequate care has been taken” to ensure the statue’s safety. Furthermore, all the maintenance work of the statue has been given to the firm that built it.

According to The Economic Times, the contract to build the new state was given to sculptor Ram Sutar and Anil Sutar’s firm Ram Sutar Art Creations Pvt Ltd. It is the same renowned firm that built the ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat. They worked together with IIT engineers and the head of the J J School of Arts to build the new 91-foot-tall statue of Shivaji Maharaj. The sword, held by the warrior king’s statue, is about 29 feet long.
