According to The Hindu, the Maharashtra Transporters Action Committee (M-TAC), a union representing tempo, auto, bus, taxi, truck, and other vehicle operators, has announced an indefinite strike from today onwards. After the meeting with the state government on Sunday, M-TAC confirmed the strike that will start on Thursday at midnight.

What Were The Transporters Talking About With The Government?

As per News18, the strike will affect a large range of services like school buses, private buses, contract carriage buses and commercial vehicles like trucks, tempos and taxis.

Earlier this week, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik met transporter representatives at the headquarters of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in Mumbai. According to News18, union representatives said the meeting ended without any concrete outcome. However, the minister urged transporters to withdraw the protest and stated that the government is willing to review and cancel pending e-challans issued to vehicles parked in authorised areas.

What Are The Demands Of Transporters?

Transporters are primarily demanding reforms in the e-challan system and relief from pending penalties. They are also seeking a reduction in toll charges and taxes, along with the withdrawal of a proposed rule that would require transporters to clear e-challans within 45 days.

If discussions between the government and transporter unions fail to reach a resolution, the strike could disrupt the movement of goods and passenger transport services in several parts of the state.
