He was an eminent figure who dedicated his life to India’s freedom movement and inspired many others as well.

Who Was Maharishi Dayananad Saraswati?

Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati was a Hindu philosopher, a renowned social leader and one of the founding members of the Arya Samaj. Born Mool Shankar Tiwari in 1824 in Gujarat, he followed the path of Sanyas (asceticism) and became a monk. He supported beliefs of reincarnation, brahmacharya, celibacy, and karma, and was also a strong supporter of women’s rights. He preached that women should have equal opportunities and even advocated for women’s right to education.

Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati authored the book Satyarth Prakash and helped revive Vedic values in society. Leaders like Sri Aurobindo and S. Radhakrishnan even called him one of the “Makers of Modern India.” His teaching and ideals inspired patriots like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Ram Prasad Bismil, and Chandra Shekhar Azad, who later went on to sacrifice their lives for the nation.

Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti is celebrated each year to honour the great man on his birthdate. According to the Hindu Panchang, this Jayanti is celebrated on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna. In 2025, it will be celebrated on February 23.

He is remembered for his work and for helping eradicate social evils like child marriage and the practice of Sati from Indian society.

Schools and educational establishments organise ceremonies, host debating competitions, and celebrate his teachings through different activities. His followers spread his message of equality, brotherhood, and peace by hosting events and ceremonies throughout the country.
