Major Gaurav Arya Was Stabbed After Retiring From The Army

During an episode of Sandese Aate Hai, our Editor-in-chief Kamiya Jani met Major (Retd) Gaurav Arya at his office. They talked about why he decided to join the armed forces, his life in the Kumaon Regiment, and what he felt after retirement from the Indian Army. While opening up about his struggles with unemployment, he shared that he was stabbed after retirement in a tea estate in Assam. Here’s what happened.

Major Gaurav Arya Opens About Getting Stabbed After Retirement

Major Gaurav Arya shared that after retirement in 1999, he didn’t know what to do with his life. He initially thought he would open a PCO booth but got a job at Apeejay Surrendra, a tea company based in Kolkata. While working at the company, he visited a tea estate in Assam and got stabbed there!

“On the 9th-10th day there, I was stabbed, and my stomach was cut open. There was a guy who put a gun to my head and he had three other guys with him. I remember, his hand was shaking, so while I was getting hit, my worst fear wasn’t the beating but the fact that this guy is an amateur and his hand is shaking, what if he pulls the trigger by mistake?!” he shared.

He went on to share that the goon had a 9mm Beretta, a pistol, on him which was not easily available at that time. Kamiya asked what triggered this incident and Major Gaurav Arya shared that he thinks the attack was by a separatist outfit named United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and he was targeted because he was alone at that time.

Major Gaurav Arya further shared that after beating him, the group that attacked him threw him into a ditch. The local people of Assam and the people of the tea estate helped him to reach his room and took complete care of him there. “You know, the local Assamese people, they stood guard outside my room at night and said, “Yeah humara mehmaan hai, isse kuch nahi hona chahiye.” They are very sweet people like that. Unknown people, those who didn’t even know me stood outside my room in the rain to protect me,” he fondly remembered.

He shared that his company also took care of him but he decided to come back home after the incident and started looking for jobs in the North.
