On this amazing episode of Sunday Brunch, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani visited Malavika Mohanan’s Mumbai home for some delicious Malayali food. As avid foodies, both Kamiya and Malavika had a lot of fun talking about all things food. Malavika enlightened us about Kerala’s coastal cuisine and we, hungry both for the knowledge as well as the food, gobbled it all up! Malabika left no stone unturned in serving us with lip-smacking deliciousness. See for yourself!
Malavika Mohanan Shared Some Stories Behind The Food
This Sunday Brunch may as well have taken place in Kerala because our table was filled with delicious Malayali food. These are the dishes that Malavika Mohanan made for us.
- Meen Curry (traditional fish curry)
- Nadan Kozhi Curry (authentic Kerala chicken curry)
- Fish Fry (crispy and perfectly spiced)
- Kerala Brown Rice
- Appam & Puri
- Raita and a comforting Sambar
What made these dishes tastier were the stories behind them. She regaled us with trivia about these dishes and how the recipes ended up in her family. For instance, the Sambar recipe is quite different from what you get in restaurants; it’s also thicker.
Malavika mentioned that the recipe was given to her mother by a professional Sambar maker in her hometown. The person used to make it for weddings and such functions.

Importance Of Traditional Food In The Actor’s Life
Malavika then talked about how important it is to preserve these traditional recipes. Her reasoning was that if a person doesn’t preserve their culture, it’ll eventually die out. Hence, it is important to pass on your traditions to the next generations.
She mentioned that she, too, plans on learning the sambar recipe so that when the time comes, she’s able to pass it on to her children too! What a thoughtful and kind gesture! We certainly hope that you’re successful in this mission, Malavika!
