Malaysia Airlines Announces Bring-Your-Own-Food Policy For Passengers: What’s Allowed And What’s Not

Apart from the birds-eye view, scintillating sunsets from up in the air and the entire thrill of flying, passengers often look forward to the food served on flights. The fruit bowl, hot meals and dessert served on flights bring a smile to every flyer’s face. But Malaysia Airlines recently announced a different food policy. And that is? BYOF— Bring Your Own Food. Read on to know why, and what’s allowed and what’s not.

Malaysia Airlines Asks Passengers On Select Routes To Bring Their Own Food

Malaysia Airlines recently announced a Bring-Your-Own-Food policy. This permits flyers to carry their own meals on board certain routes. So, why would flyers have the option to bring packed meals from home for an in-flight experience, that they may have been looking forward to? This is because Malaysia Airlines (MH) is currently undergoing a transition to a new catering provider after ending its partnership with Brahim’s Food Services (BFS).

Throughout this catering transition phase, the airlines will continue to serve meals and refreshments on their flights. However, this doesn’t apply to all routes. Passengers flying on selected international and domestic routes on Malaysia Airlines may face dining issues and changes in meals. The meal offerings, be it revised meals or pre-packed ones will now depend on the flight duration and travel class.

According to Aviation A2Z, on shorter routes, passengers can expect pre-packed meals. But this is based on the travel class and flight duration. Whereas on longer routes, passengers can expect revised meals. Malaysia Airlines has stated that this Bring-Your-Own-Food policy specifically pertains to passengers who ordered special meals that are temporarily unavailable due to the airline’s transition to a new caterer.

What Can You & Can’t You Bring?

So, what can you and cannot bring as part of Malaysia Airlines’s Bring-Your-Own-Food policy? Well, first of all as per Malaysia Airlines’s website, all food and beverage brought by passengers must adhere to their liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) requirements. So, the food shouldn’t exceed 100 millilitres (ml) for international flyers departing or transiting from international airports in the country.
