An odd incident from China has surprised workers at a certain place of business. A man, leaving supervisor who is frequently considered the foundation of office camaraderie, has raised questions by requesting that his former coworkers pay him back for the milk tea he formerly “treated” them to.

What appeared to be a harmless gesture at first took an unexpected turn when a comprehensive invoice requesting a total of 1,500 yuan (₹17,270) from the group showed up in their inboxes, according to the South China Morning Post. The incident has prompted a fervent online debate.

A user of the social media platform Xiaohongshu named @Shengxiao revealed her encounter with her former supervisor on September 1. In an odd turn of events, the man submitted a painstakingly written bill to each of his former coworkers, including the number of cups consumed and the associated amount owed, which ranged from 90 to 255 yuan.

The supervisor attempted to shift responsibility by blaming his girlfriend’s involvement in this surprise money-grabbing scheme. But it only served to raise the level of scepticism. The request was outrageous, but @Shengxiao and her coworkers found themselves quickly transferring the required cash.

Chinese internet users expressed their amazement and fury at the supervisor’s penny-pinching move after learning the shocking information. Someone stated that this is not just outrageous; it’s beyond comprehension.

Another commentator made the remark that he highly doubted it was his girlfriend’s idea and that detailed list suggests otherwise. He initially charmed his coworkers with milk tea before giving them a bill.

In China, the custom of drinking alcohol has been replaced by the new culture of drinking milk tea, which is more and more disapproved of by younger generations. While older generations think that having a drink together strengthens relationships, young professionals regularly complain about their bosses pressuring them to drink. This is not the first time that workplace frugalness has shocked social media.
