Mangey Khan, Beloved Rajasthani Folk Singer Of Barmer Boys, Dies At 49

Mangey Khan, the celebrated lead vocalist of the Rajasthani folk band Barmer Boys, has passed away at the age of 49 following heart surgery. Known to his fans and loved ones as “Manga,” he recently underwent heart surgery, from which he sadly did not recover. Khan’s death has left a significant void in the world of music.

Khan’s musical journey began in his native village of Ramsar, Barmer, Rajasthan. Reportedly, his talent was first recognised in 2010 by Amarrass Records. Initially accompanying Rukma Bai, the first female Manganiyar singer to perform publicly, Khan’s powerful voice quickly took centre stage. 

The Barmer Boys, with Khan as their lead vocalist, made their debut at the Amarrass Desert Music Festival in 2011. The group quickly rose to fame, performing at prestigious international events such as Coke Studio, NH7, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and WOMAD.

Ashutosh Sharma, founder of Amarrass Records, the label that represented Barmer Boys, shared Khan’s optimistic last words before entering the hospital: “Tabiyat -Zordaar, miltey hain, operation ke baad” (Health is strong, we’ll meet after the operation), according to Hindustan Times. However, despite this hope, Khan’s passing has shocked his family, friends, and fans around the globe.

The audience could connect deeply to him during every one of his performances. People not only admired him for his majestic voice but were also really drawn to his personality. He was not just a part of the incredible band, Bamer Boys but has a lot more under his belt of achievement, He also collaborated with world-renowned artists like Khaled and Fatoumata Diawara. These performances added to his musical legacy and left a lasting impression on listeners worldwide.

During his short but illustrious career in music, Mangey Khan performed at over 200 concerts in 20 countries. He also managed to captivate audiences at global festivals such as Roskilde in Denmark and the Ziro Music Festival in India. His songs, including “Bole To Mitho Lage” and “Ranaji,” have become iconic within the genre of Rajasthani folk music.

Khan’s passing is not only a devastating loss for his family but also for the music community.
