Regarded as one of the most important days to honour the forefathers, this day is considered even more powerful and holy in 2025 because of the ongoing Maha Kumbh celebrations. Crores of devotees waited for Mauni Amavasya to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.
Dates and timing of Mauni Amavasya 2025:
- This year, the auspicious festival falls on January 28 and 29.
- The auspicious Amavasya Tithi started at 7:35 PM on Tuesday.
- It will end at 6:05 PM on Wednesday.
On this holy day, devotees take a bath in the sacred river, especially the Ganga River. This ceremonial ritual is believed to remove their past sins and cleanse their souls. Many privileged devotees practise charity and distribute clothes, food, and necessary amenities to needy people. Also, many feed cows on this holy occasion.
Many devotees also perform the tradition of Pitru Tarpan. This significant ritual is followed by lighting a diya under a peepal tree to honour ancestors. Another prominent practice among many devotees is to observe a vow of silence. Staying quiet throughout the day signifies focusing on introspection, inner peace, and spiritual enlightenment. On Mauni Amavasya, many Hindus also fast throughout the day.
