Since Friday night, Meghalaya has received heavy rainfall in West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills. This incessant rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides in various areas and even claimed 10 lives so far. According to The Indian Express report, the continuous rain has also impacted connectivity and caused significant infrastructure damage.
The flash floods have washed away the Dalu-Baghmara Road which connects the West Garo Hills and the South Garo Hills. Also, wooden bridges that link these districts have been destroyed by floods and electricity connection has been impacted in several parts of the region.
As per the latest update by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, three deaths have been caused by flooding in Dalu, West Garo Hills. Furthermore, seven people from the same family were killed in a landslide in South Garo Hills’ Gasuapara. He also mentioned that the administration has identified alternative routes to restore road connectivity in the impacted areas.
Rescue Operations Underway In Worst Hit Areas
The NDRF and SDRF have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations in the worst-hit areas. They will be working together with civil defence, police, and fire services to rescue people stuck in flooded areas in Meghalaya. The district administration has also been asked to mobilise relief efforts and release ex-gratia payments to the families immediately.
As per reports, the IMD has forecasted continuous rainfall in most parts of the North East over the next five days. For now, the district administration has been asked to remain on high alert and monitor the situation.
