For the last couple of days, Meghalaya has been witnessing incessant rain. The heavy rain has caused flash flooding and landslides which, unfortunately, have claimed the lives of many people. As many as 15 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents so far. Rescue operations are underway. The rains began on the Friday night, October 4, 2024. Since then, it has relentlessly pelted the Northeast Indian state. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about the weather updates in this state.

According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or the HT, at least ten deaths have occurred in the South Garo Hills owing to the flash floods triggered by heavy rains. This happened within a span of 24 hours.

The Gasuapara region has also witnessed landslides caused by the heavy rain and a bridge was washed away. Among the deceased, a family of seven were tragically buried in a landslide in their own homes. Three of the seven people were minors.

Five more casualties were reported on Sunday. A mother and a daughter were buried alive in their homes in a landslide. This tragic incident took place in East Garo Hills. A man died when a tree uprooted and crashed into his car. On Friday, in Dimapara, a car crossing the flooded road under the West Garo Hills was washed away. A father and a son were in it.
Rescue Operations By The NDRF And SDRF Are Going On
Team SDRF continues to rise to the challenge and maintained a presence in the flood-affected area since Friday, following severe flash flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The Chief Minister of the state, Conrad Sangma, reviewed the situation in Meghalaya. If reports are to go by, search and rescue operations are going on in the worst-hit regions of the state.

Both, the National Disaster Response Force or the NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force or the SDRF have been deployed.
