Meghalaya’s Umngot River One Of The World’s Cleanest Rivers: Ministry Of Jal Shakti

The Jal Shakti Ministry has shared a stunning image of a boat floating on Meghalaya’s Umngot river that is currently going viral on Twitter. The water of the river is so clean that the greenery at the bottom is visible. In the pic, the boat appears to be flying mid-air instead of floating on water. In the tweet, the Minister posted Meghalaya’s River Umngot and thanked the people of the state for keeping their rivers clean.

Meghalaya Is The First Indian State To Have A Water Policy

Did you know Meghalaya is the first state in India to have a water policy?  After Chennai’s 3 reservoirs completely ran out of water, this policy will be a positive step for the state. The draft policy was approved by the cabinet post a detail discussion by the ministers. This meeting was chaired by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma.

This water policy will make sure that the state of Meghalaya will have better water management which also ensures active participation from the people of Meghalaya. As the land of Meghalaya belongs to the people, their participation will also mean a big deal to this policy.

The Policy Ensures Proper Utilisation Of Water

The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong said, “We will also have a Water Sanitation Village Council (WSAC) and I am sure this policy will go a long way in changing the mindset of our people and also for proper utilization of water.” as reported by the Meghalaya Times.

According to reports along, along with managing the existing water there are also plans to work on the issues related to groundwater, river pollution and the protection of catchment areas.

The policy will help the northern state of India to receive more rainfall and to preserve the water and not let it flow to Bangladesh, there will be dams build. Tynsong mentioned that a detailed study will be done on dams and how to correctly use them and if there are options for making it multi-purpose. This will ensure the Meghalaya converse rainwater and uses it later when required.
