Men & Women May Need Different Breakfasts For Weight Loss, Says Study; Here’s Why

We all know everyone’s body responds differently to different foods. But, did you know that one of the many factors influencing this could be the gender of the person? Well, according to a new study, it has been found that breakfast foods affect men’s and women’s health and energy levels very differently. Intrigued? Read on to learn more about this study.

A new study, Modelling Sex-Specific Whole-Body Metabolic Responses To Feeding and Fasting, from the University of Waterloo has found that men’s and women’s metabolisms respond differently to foods. The report found that a person’s sex plays an important part in how their body reacts to certain foods. As per the report, men and women should eat different breakfasts to lose weight.

For this, employed a mathematical model to understand men’s and women’s metabolisms. They found that men’s metabolisms respond better to “a meal laden with high carbohydrates like oats and grains after fasting for several hours.” On the other hand, for women, a “meal with a higher percentage of fat, such as omelettes and avocados” could do wonders if they’re trying to lose weight or even if they’re looking for healthy breakfast options to keep up their energy levels.

For this study, the researchers emphasise how men and women process fat. As per Anita Layton, a professor of Applied Mathematics and Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematical Biology and Medicine, this study model shows that women “store more fat immediately after a meal but also burn more fat during a fast.”

According to this report, the seemingly “inconsequential decision” of what we eat for breakfast can greatly affect our weight loss journey. Stéphanie Abo, an Applied Mathematics PhD candidate and the lead author of the study, says, “Lifestyle is a big factor in our overall health.” Whether you’re trying to lose weight, maintain weight, or just keep up your energy, you need to understand the impact your diet has on your metabolism.

The researchers will now try to build on this study and understand how metabolism is affected with the consideration of an individual’s weight, age, or stage in the menstrual cycle.
