The Dubai Municipality has introduced a new beach safety model which employs high-tech rescue robots and aerial drones to save swimmers in distress at a faster rate. The project is a local first and enhances the image of Dubai as a smart city in terms of coastal safety.

Dubai Deploys Rescue Robots And Drones To Strengthen Beach Safety

The system combines superior robotics, airborne surveillance and trained guards. They will be combined to create a contemporary safety network, which is aimed at securing both residents and visitors in the city and on the crowded beaches.

High-Speed Rescue Robot On Water

An aquatic rescue robot is at the centre of the new system. This remote-controlled device crosses the water much faster than a swimming lifeguard, who may be headed to a rescue.

The robot has been capable of travelling in a range of one kilometre at a speed of up to five times faster than traditional swimming rescues. It can also pull a weight of up to 500 kilogrammes, and hence the rescuers are able to help more than one or two swimmers at a time.

Built for challenging sea conditions, the robot gives lifeguards a safer way to reach someone in trouble while reducing physical risk during the first stage of rescue.

A ‘Flying Lifebuoy’ Watching From Above

Water rescue drones (also known as flying lifebuoys) are also deployed on the public beaches of Dubai. Such drones can swiftly fly over the sea, find the swimmers who require some assistance, and land directly on the water.

When deployed, they offer instant support in the form of buoyancy. They have their own cameras that transmit live video to onshore lifeguards to enable them to evaluate the scenario and organise rescue operations more effectively.

According to the report of the Dubai Media Office, the system increases the speed of response and safety of the rescue teams, besides increasing the coverage of large coastal territories.

Beaches: Smarter Safety Across Dubai

The new technology is part of a larger beach safety network that covers the trained lifeguards, central monitor systems and around-the-clock patrol.

The project includes most of the existing popular sites under the management of Dubai Municipality, such as the Umm Suqeim 1 Night Beach, the Jumeirah 3 Night Beach, the Jumeirah 1 Beach, the Jumeirah 2 Beach, and the Al Mamzar Beach Park.

These are the beaches that receive thousands of visitors in a week. The new technology has been installed, and the authorities are trying to make sure that the response time for rescue is fast and that the environment is safe for all those people enjoying the coastline.
