Dubai Municipality recently completed an AED9.5 million heritage development project. This was in the markets of Deira! Yes, as a result, three heritage trails were unveiled, and they span a total of 1,784 m. Here’s all you need to know about this massive development in Dubai.
AED9.5 Million Heritage Trail Revealed
The aim is to enhance visitor experience and to make it better for both tourists and locals alike, thereby preserving the historic character of the markets. It supports over 500 shops within the Grand Souk. And there are three integrated trails, namely the Gold Souq Trail, which is 995 m, the Al Ahmadiya School Heritage Axis, which is 430 m, and the Spice Souq Axis, which is 359 m. With the trails spanning 25,800 m², it connects seven traditional markets. Yes, these include the Herbs Market, Textiles Souq, Utensils Souq, Carpets Market, Spice Souq, Perfume Market, and Household Market.

With the trails linking these aforementioned markets, it must be mentioned that they are surrounded by historical landmarks. As a result, it creates an immersive visitor journey. The journey combines culture, tourism, and shopping! The enhancements have included rehabilitated public spaces. Yes, with new fabric shading structures that cover 210 m² and 200 m² canopies which is behind the Bin Naeem Mosque, these enhancements are bound to make the journey for visitors easier. In fact, this project also upgraded shop façade lighting. Yes, it has installed 38 column-mounted sign boards, 770 m² of pavements were enhanced, and 154 floor markings were also installed, as well.

With the use of authentic local material such as sarooj, the restoration of market structure and façades has been done in such a way that it preserves heritage. In fact, the three public squares have been developed with their new seating and enhanced amenities. As a result, visitors are encouraged to linger, so that they experience the market’s vibrant atmosphere.
Additionally, these heritage tourist trails support tourism and culture. It integrates with cultural exploration, all the while enhancing the tourism appeal of the emirate. Moreover, it is a part of Dubai Municipality’s ongoing effort, which aims to celebrate the cultural and architectural heritage of the city. And the integrated trails also complement the heritage sites protection programme of Dubai. Additionally, it aligns with the Dubai 2040 Master Plan!
