It seems that the future is already here in Dubai, as the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority begins the trials for driverless electric pods. These electric pods would take you directly to your destination without getting stuck in traffic or waiting for a bus. The trial is going to be four weeks long, and it is happening at Bluewaters Island.

Dubai Launches Four-Week Trial Of Dubai Glydways Automated Transit System

Dubai Roads & Transport Authority announced on Sunday, October 11th that it has begun a four-week trial of Dubai Glydways automated transit system. This trial is happening at Bluewaters Island. So, basically, under this trial, it has introduced small self-driving electric vehicles. These electric vehicles can carry up to six passengers along the dedicated tracks. Offering a futuristic travel experience, residents and tourists will get a glimpse of how they could move around the city in the coming years.

Coming to the new system, the promise is an on-demand journey. The vehicles will travel at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and they would cover about 250 km on a single battery charge. But the question that arises is: what are these driverless spots? Well, these driverless spots operate on their own narrow guideways. These are separate from regular road traffic. Moreover, they offer a potentially more predictable journey.

More About These Driverless Electric Pods

The trials are happening for four weeks, and the Dubai RTA will assess the safety of the vehicle, its reliability, passenger experience, and journey time. All of this will be considered before it can be widely deployed. This initiative is being implemented in partnership with Glydways and Dubai Holding.

Offering round-the-clock on-demand transport, passengers will get to travel directly between departure and arrival points without having to follow bus routes. Each vehicle would be able to accommodate four to six passengers, and it would be equipped with artificial intelligence. As revealed in a report by Gulf News, there would also be 20 high-resolution LIDAR sensors, radar, and even high-definition cameras, which will allow safe navigation. Passengers would also be able to personalise the temperature and entertainment options that would be available inside the pods.

How Are The Driverless Electric Pods Convenient?

The system, as mentioned in the report, will be able to coordinate more than 10 vehicles travelling in close succession. There would be intervals of less than one second between them. This network has been designed so that over 20,000 passengers can be carried per hour in both directions. Basically, it combines the convenience of a small vehicle with the capacity of a mass transit system.

One of the biggest benefits would be improved connectivity between Dubai Metro stations and nearby communities, shopping destinations, offices, and tourist attractions. Possible routes under study include National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters Island. Other routes include Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Mohammed Bin Rashid City, and Business Bay.

So basically, if this system gets introduced, it would allow commuters to complete the final stretch of the journey. And for this, they won’t have to rely on private cars or conventional taxis. Not to mention, unlike the traditional rail systems, vehicles are narrow and are supported by lightweight structures that can be built at ground level or elevated. The technology could make it easier to reduce automated transport connections in areas that are densely populated.
