Less than eight months after opening, the museum has already overtaken some of the world’s oldest cultural institutions, with over 45% of its visitors coming from abroad. Egypt just landed a serious global win. The Grand Egyptian Museum is now the world’s third-most-visited museum, having hosted nearly 7 million visitors since its official opening in November 2025.
Grand Egyptian Museum Ranks 3rd Most Visited Museum Globally
According to a Forbes report highlighted by Egypt’s Cabinet Media Centre, more than 45% of GEM’s visitors have come from abroad, a strong signal of how quickly the museum has established itself as an international drawcard rather than just a local attraction. That international share is notable for a museum that’s barely a year old.
Why It’s Such A Big Deal
GEM isn’t just popular; it’s massive. Described as the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation, it houses more than 100,000 artefacts spanning nearly 5,000 years of Egyptian history. Its biggest draw is arguably the complete Tutankhamun collection, over 5,000 artefacts displayed together for the first time, spread across 7,500 square metres of exhibition space. Visitors are also greeted by a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses II right at the entrance, setting the tone before you’ve even properly stepped inside.

Part Of A Bigger Tourism Push
The Forbes report also touched on Egypt’s broader tourism trajectory. In 2025, Egypt welcomed 19 million tourists, a 21% increase from the previous year and well above the global average growth rate, partly due to a 32% increase in non-stop flights to Egyptian destinations. Egypt’s government is now targeting 30 million tourists annually by 2030, with GEM positioned as a central piece of that plan, alongside the pyramids, Cairo, the Red Sea, and newer developments like the city of El Alamein.

If you haven’t already added GEM to your Egypt itinerary, this might be the nudge. Between the online ticketing system Egypt rolled out earlier this year to keep bookings safe, and now this global ranking, the museum has quickly gone from most-anticipated to must-visit.
