An early morning earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean sent a jolt through parts of Egypt today, with tremors felt as far as Cairo and Alexandria. Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has since confirmed that just one injury has been recorded nationwide.

What We Know About The Egypt Earthquake So Far

The quake was centred off the coast near Crete, and different monitoring agencies have put its magnitude somewhere between 5.3 and 5.9, a fairly typical spread for initial readings. Seismological institutes often vary slightly in the first few hours after a tremor. Either way, it was strong enough to be felt well beyond its epicentre, rattling buildings and nerves across several parts of Egypt.

How Egypt’s Health Ministry Is Responding

The ministry said its Central Operations Room has been actively monitoring the situation nationwide since the tremor hit, with hospitals and emergency departments placed on high alert to handle any incoming reports. As it stands, only one injury has been recorded across the entire country. That individual received the necessary medical care and has since been discharged, with their condition reported as improved.

The health system remains on standby regardless, with operating rooms and hospital emergency units continuing round-the-clock monitoring in case that changes.

What This Means If You’re In Cairo Or Alexandria Right Now

If you felt the tremor and are feeling a bit daunted, that’s a completely normal reaction. Earthquakes of this magnitude are unsettling even when they don’t cause serious damage. Officials have asked the public to stay calm, rely only on information from official sources, and follow public safety guidance if further updates are issued.

The eastern Mediterranean sits in a seismically active zone, and minor-to-moderate tremors do get felt in Egypt from time to time without translating into significant damage. This one appears to be following that pattern so far, but it’s worth keeping an eye on official channels over the next day or so as the full picture comes in.
