An early morning earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean sent a jolt through parts of Egypt today, with tremors felt as far as Cairo and Alexandria. Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has since confirmed that just one injury has been recorded nationwide.

The quake was centred off the coast near Crete, and different monitoring agencies have put its magnitude somewhere between 5.3 and 5.9, a fairly typical spread for initial readings. As it stands, only one injury has been recorded across the entire country. That individual received the necessary medical care and has since been discharged, with their condition reported as improved.
The health system remains on standby regardless, with operating rooms and hospital emergency units continuing round-the-clock monitoring in case that changes.
