A man who was flying from Dubai to Mumbai via SpiceJet faced a gruelling 14-hour delay. He has now been given compensation as per the report of PTI of AED2,300. This is roughly the price of two adult return tickets on the same route. As it happens, he had filed a case as he was left only with a burger and fries during this 14-hour wait. The panel mentioned how the airline cannot escape its duty of looking after travellers.

Additionally, the panel mentioned how passengers must be given proper meals, drinking water and resting facilities. Not to mention, they must also be given timely updates during the long disruption. The compensation was therefore given due to the arrangements being inadequate.

When Else Are You Eligible For Compensation?

Not just long delays, sometimes it so happens that an airline may abruptly cancel the flight. In such cases, the next question that arises is whether one is eligible for compensation in case of untimely cancellation, which leads to difficulty in securing an alternative booking. Well, the answer to this rule is that when a person books an airline ticket, they agree to certain terms and conditions.

And while travelling in the UAE, passengers are governed by these terms and conditions of the airline ticket. When they book the ticket, they agree to abide by these rules. However, airlines can be held responsible if there is a delay in scheduled flights. After all, they are responsible for damage that results in the late arrival of the passenger, cargo, or even checked luggage.

So basically, the airlines are liable for delays if they are beyond the control of the airline as per the Montreal Convention of 1999. And the UAE is a signatory to this convention.

So with this detail laid out for you, we hope you are informed about the rules and rights of flyers from the UAE.
