If your weekend plans included camping at Al Watbha Lake, then you might have to reconsider.  Here’s a quick heads-up by Abu Dhabi City Municipality. The authorities have announced a short, scheduled closure of the popular desert escape to carry out routine maintenance this month.

Abu Dhabi’s Al Wathba Lake To Close Briefly for Maintenance On December 29

Starting Monday, December 29, from 12:30 pm to 7 pm, the Al Wathba Lake site will be closed for maintenance and will reopen the same evening. It’s a temporary pause, and officials say it’s all about keeping the area comfortable, safe, and visitor-ready this Winter.

Why The Temporary Closure Matters

Maintenance closures might sound minor, but at a spot as loved as Al Wathba Lake is crucial in terms of maintenance, as mentioned in a report by Gulf News. The lake sees heavy footfall, especially during winter. Campers, families, and photographers love to visit this site during weekends and holidays.

Authorities have advised residents and visitors to plan their trips around the closure window to avoid disappointment. If you’re aiming for an evening picnic, you still have a chance, but just arrive after 7 pm on the same day.

What Makes Al Wathba Lake So Popular

Al Watbha Lake is situated just 40 minutes from Abu Dhabi city via the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain highway. Yet, with such a short distance, the site feels more peaceful than the chaotic urban life. Entry is free and hence sits perfectly for a month-end checklist.

The lake is famous for its shimmering salt formations and clear, reflective waters that glow under the desert sun. Close to the protected Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, the area also attracts birdwatchers, hikers, and anyone craving quiet open space in the UAE.

Camping, Picnics, And Family Fun

Al Wathba Lake offers 13 designated campsites spread around the lake. So you can either come for a one-day trip or camp overnight. There are also 24 picnic areas, which make it perfect for families who want space without crowd gatherings.

Kids get to enjoy playgrounds, cycling paths, and multiple volleyball courts. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own supplies, from food and water to camping gear.
