One of the roads in Riyadh is making day to day commuting in the city something more than what was anticipated. At the intersection of the Al-Kharj Road and the Southern Ring Road, and just outside of Exit 19, the Saudi National Anthem is being played not by the speakers of the cars, but by the road itself.
Motorists Drive Over Roads To Hear Saudi Anthem
According to report by Scene Now, this musical road is done with specially designed grooves cut into the asphalt. When there is a set of patterned strips that are rolled over by the car tyres at an appropriate speed, vibrations will be produced which become a recognisable melody. It is an easy idea, although it is surprisingly successful.
The Way The Road Turns Movement To Music
The idea relies on precision. The grooves usually referred to as musical rumble strips are spaced such that every vibration can be translated to a musical note. When tyres go over them, the vibrations are arranged in a sequence forming a tune.
But there’s a catch. Speed matters.
The anthem sounds quite distinctly when drivers drive at a steady speed and it remains under control. Exceed speed or slowness, the tune disintegrates. In that regard, the road is not only entertaining, but it silently picks at more responsible driving habits.
An Unobtrusive Nudge In The Right Direction
This isn’t just about novelty. The installation will provoke drivers not to exceed the speed limits without showing them a flash warning or paying a fine. Rather, it rewards repetition with a familiar melody.
Such a practise is important in a city where a long stretch of road may be exhausting. Such a minor alteration is a non-distracting addition to the engagement. It provides drivers with an incentive to drive at steady pace instead of driving at a breakneck speed.

A Combination Of Innovation And National Identity
Such projects have been seen in other countries but this installation has a cultural touch. The road bridges the gap between technology and identity with the help of the national anthem.
It is also a reminder that innovation does not necessarily have to be featured in screens or apps. In some cases, it is constructed below you.
To a large number of drivers, the experience is a surprise initially. Then it clicks. The road is reflecting what you are doing with your car.
