If you’ve just landed in Saudi Arabia and you wish to hit the road, then you can now. Saudi Arabia is going easy on driving rules and regulations. Also, here’s a guide that will help expats in Saudi Arabia convert their driver’s license without the hassle and stress.
Driving In Saudi Arabia And How To Convert A Driver’s License Without The Stress
Saudi Arabia now allows visitors and residents from 48 countries to convert their existing driving license directly into a Saudi one. There’s no need for any driving test for the same. So, here’s how you can save money and time. It’s a huge relief for tourists, newcomers, and anyone who’s not in the mood to return to driving school.
If you’re from places like the UK, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, or South Africa, you’re already on the fast track. GCC citizens? You’re in luck, too. Just check if your country made the approved list.
What Foreigners Need To Know Before Driving
Here’s the simple rule: you can legally drive in Saudi Arabia with a valid international or home-country license for up to one year after you arrive. After that, or once you become a resident, you’ll need a Saudi-issued license.
Expats from countries like India or most of Europe can drive for one year only if they carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). It has to be accompanied by your national license, as mentioned in a report by The Times of India. The basics still stand:
- Minimum age to drive: 18
- Women have been driving legally since 2018
- Rental companies often insist on a Saudi license, even if the law doesn’t
Two Ways To Get A Saudi License
There are two ways to do this:
- Direct Conversion
You skip the driving test entirely if your current license is from one of the 48 approved countries. It’s the faster, cleaner option. - New Application
If your country isn’t approved, you’ll need to go the full route by enrolling in a driving school, written test and practical exam. It takes more time and comes with training and test fees.

How To Convert Your License In Five Straightforward Steps
- Translate Your License
Get an official Arabic translation. It usually costs around SAR 100 and takes a day or two.
- Book an Absher Appointment
Upload your documents and schedule a visit with Muroor. Give yourself a week to sort out the medical check.
- Pay the License Fee
Use your bank app via Sadad. Expect SAR 80 for two years or SAR 250 for five.
- Get a Medical Check
Head to an Efada-approved centre. They’ll run a quick eye test and basic health exam, costing roughly SAR 150–200.
- Visit Muroor
Bring everything with you. If your documents are in order, you’re likely to receive your Saudi license the same day.
Whether you’re here for work, travel, or a long stay, handling your driving license shouldn’t be the stressful part when in Saudi Arabia.
