Sharjah’s Dibba Al Hisn To Be Nominated For UNESCO World Heritage List? Here’s What We Know

The Dibba AlHisn Fort in Sharjah hardly needs any introduction, and now it seems that it is looking towards a UNESCO nomination. For those who are wondering, this plan has been unveiled by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who is the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who is the supreme council member and ruler of Sharjah. With plans to develop the historic Dibba Al Hisn Fort area, they plan to secure nominations for its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Dibba al-Hisn to Be Nominated For UNESCO World Heritage Site?

As revealed in a report by the Gulf News, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi has plans to launch a project that aims to preserve the three overlapping archaeological layers. These span different eras and will be done through a specially-designed canopy. The canopy will be constructed above the site so that it shields it from rain and also protects visitors from the sun. As a result, it will help in the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage of Dibba Al Hisn.

In case you are unaware, this fort is located on the Gulf of Oman. A part of Sharjah’s eastern coast, this site has a deep historical significance. Yes, once a thriving Arabian marketplace that attracted traders from India, China, and Sindh, it was only later that it became a site for a pivotal battle.

Recent excavation by Sharjah’s Department of Antiquities has shown a large underground communal burial site. These contained human skeletons that were accompanied by a rich range of honorary items. From glazed jars and pottery vessels to even a rare collection of Roman-era glass bottles, the list included some of the most exclusive items, including but not limited to ornate pieces of jewellery as well.

Recently, Faya Was Incribed

The development comes at a time when it was only recently that the Faya Paleolandscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Another heritage site in Sharjah, it stands as the second site in the UAE that has received this recognition after the cultural sites in Al Ain. A living testament to early human ingenuity, it holds a deep standing in the Arabian Peninsula. Truly a historic milestone, this site is not just a historical discovery, but also happens to be a window into the adaptive capacities of early humans.

These humans who lived 200,000 years ago, lived in the harshest of environments on Earth. Layers have been uncovered at Faya, which gives profound insights into their resilience.
