Why Did Formula 1 Cancel Bahrain & Saudi Arabia Grand Prix Races In April?

Formula 1 Grand Prix

Amid Middle East tensions, Formula One has now decided to cancel the upcoming Grand Prix racing events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this April. The announcement was made recently ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The announcement has many F1 fans upset. Here’s everything we know so far about this latest development in the F1 racing world.

Formula 1 Cancels Grand Prix In Bahrain & Saudi Arabia

The cancellation was announced by Formula One and its governing body, FIA, in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. The upcoming Grand Prix, which was set to happen in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in April, will not take place now. The decision was taken because of safety concerns amid rising tensions in the Middle East. According to the official X post of the FIA, authorities considered several alternatives before ultimately deciding to cancel the racing event.

The decision was taken in full consultation with the Formula One Group, local promoters, and their member clubs in the region. According to a report by The Times of India, the Bahrain Grand Prix was originally scheduled for April 12 at the Bahrain International Circuit. Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was scheduled to take place on April 18 in Jeddah. Both of these races are traditionally held as night races under floodlights.

Security Risks And Logistical Issues Led To Cancellation

According to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the organisation had to prioritise the well-being of everyone involved in the Formula 1 championship. After all, safety comes first before any racing event. The cancellations are linked to rising tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

According to a report by The Times of India, security risk was the main reason behind the cancellation. But there is another reason as well: logistical challenges. Formula 1 races require massive freight shipments of cars, equipment, and broadcast gear weeks in advance. Since airport operations are currently disrupted in the region, transporting all this cargo has become difficult. Both Middle Eastern races have now been removed. This means the 2026 Formula 1 calendar will have 22 races instead of 24.
