Saudi Arabia’s fitness scene has moved through Pilates, Lagree, and mall workouts in fairly quick succession; now it’s heading somewhere darker, literally. GymNation has launched Dans le Noir, the Kingdom’s first workout class held entirely in the dark, and it’s built on a pretty simple idea: take away the mirror, and you take away most of the reason people feel self-conscious at the gym in the first place.
How Dans Le Noir Actually Works
Classes start from Sunday, September 6, at select GymNation locations across KSA.
Each session runs for 45 minutes, and it starts with the lights still on. Before anything goes dark, members move through a short grounding sequence, balance work, joint mobilisation, and proprioceptive activation, designed to build spatial awareness while there’s still something to see. Then the room goes dark, and it stays that way for the rest of the class.
From that point, everything is guided by voice and an atmospheric soundtrack delivered through wireless headphones. Members are equipped with a weighted vest and wrist weights, so resistance is built directly into the body rather than relying on visible equipment or racks. The workout itself moves through functional movement, strength work and breathwork; no mirrors, no phones, nothing to look at except, well, nothing.
Why Ditching The Mirror Might Be The Point
The pitch here isn’t novelty for novelty’s sake. Gym floors can be intimidating precisely because they’re visual; everyone can see everyone else, compare, judge, or feel judged, whether or not anyone actually is. Dans le Noir removes that dynamic structurally rather than just telling people not to worry about it. In a room where nobody can see anybody, a first-timer and a seasoned regular are working on genuinely equal footing, and the mirror, usually the most dominant fixture in any gym, becomes completely irrelevant.

FAQs
How does the instructor keep track of everyone if the room is completely dark?
The instructor navigates the space using night vision goggles throughout the class, acting as an unseen guide who can monitor safety and form even though members can't see them.
What inspired the idea behind Dans le Noir?
The format borrows directly from the global "dining in the dark" trend, restaurants that serve meals in complete darkness to heighten other senses. GymNation has applied the same principle to a workout, betting that removing sight sharpens focus and body awareness instead of taking away from the experience.
