Egyptian Ramadan is never dull. A neighbourhood in Cairo turned tradition into history. One of the biggest community iftars in history took place in the district of Al-Matariya. Over 100,000 residents attended to break their fast, and the festivity was placed in the Guinness World Records.

What began as a local event in the past has now turned out to be a national icon of philanthropy, as reported by Arab News.
It Was A Table Which Spread Over 20 Streets
The residents created a huge open-air eating venue in Matariya. Long tables were running through 20 streets, with banners on them saying Ramadan in Matariya. Lights hung overhead. The crowd had balloons floating in the air. Families stood on balconies and neighbours were greeting each other down the street.
Over 2,000 volunteers worked behind the scenes for hours to cook the massive number of meals. One of the streets was fully devoted to volunteers preparing dishes and organising the food prior to the sunset.
The crowd took their seats together when the call to prayer was finally given to them to break their fast. The moment was the heart of Ramadan to many, taking food with strangers and soon turning them into relatives.
A Custom That Continues To Increase
Matariya’s iftar is well-rooted among the community. The gathering was originally organised more than 10 years ago by the residents. It was the 12th anniversary of the celebration, and this was by far the biggest one.
The running of the event is a pride for local families. They organise logistics, collect donations and invite neighbours around Cairo. The celebration has received a lot of coverage beyond the district over time.
Famous personalities, ministers, and foreigners were at the iftar this year. Some ambassadors were present at the event, demonstrating that a neighbourhood tradition can attract the attention of the world.
Culture, Music And Egyptian Heritage
Food that was the centre of attraction was not the sole attraction. Cultural shows in the evening were performed by the performers related to the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. Musicians and cultural performers held shows and music performances that glorified the long traditions of Egypt.
The performances gave a festival atmosphere to the streets. Children waved balloons, neighbours shared sweets. Cameras were flashing at the tables as visitors bore a rare view of thousands of people sitting at a common table.

Safety And Community Support
The workers involved in this organisation were volunteers who were closely cooperating with the Egyptian Red Crescent, which deployed ambulances and medical forces all around the district to provide help to everyone in need.
Fortunately, the night was spent without any trouble. When the sun went down, and the fast was broken, the sky was filled with balloons and all the cheers on the streets.
