Abu Dhabi has a knack for rolling out headline-making initiatives, and its latest one proves the point. The emirate has just launched the Golden Food Product List, a scheme designed to expedite compliant food imports, reduce costs for importers, and, yes, maintain the safety standard exactly where it belongs. It’s a joint effort by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) and Abu Dhabi Customs, and it feels like one of those policies that could quietly make a big difference.

Abu Dhabi Rolls Out Golden Food Product List To Speed Up Imports And Cut Costs

Here’s how it works. If a product has a clean track record, it doesn’t get stuck at the border. Instead, it gets waved through with pre-clearance, which basically means no sitting around for hours and no endless inspections. Customs officers can then focus on the shipments that actually raise eyebrows, the ones that carry more risk.

For businesses, that’s huge. Lower transport costs, faster market entry, and fewer trucks sitting idle at the border. And let’s be honest, and anyone in logistics will tell you that dead time is where money leaks away.

The Officials’ Take On The Initiative

Dr Tariq Ahmed Al Ameri, Acting Director-General of ADAFSA, was quick to point out that this isn’t about relaxing standards. The whole idea, he explained, is to make trade easier without diluting food safety. A fair point.

On the customs side, Rashed Lahej Al Mansoori called it a “model of government integration.” That’s a bold claim, but to be fair, Abu Dhabi has been building its reputation as a logistics hub for years. This scheme just adds more fuel to that fire.

Not Everyone Gets A Golden Ticket

Now, before companies start celebrating, it’s worth noting the conditions. To even get on the list, importers must:

  • Prove five shipments in a row with zero issues
  • Hold a valid health certificate from the source country
  • File requests 24 hours in advance through the Advanced Trade and Logistics Platform (ATLP)

Miss a step and you’re back in the regular queue. Worse still, any violation or safety alert means instant delisting.  No second chances.

Why It Matters

Truth be told, the Golden Food Product List is about more than just paperwork. It ties into Abu Dhabi’s wider push to diversify its economy and build trust between government and business. And come on, food safety isn’t something you want to gamble with. One mistake and reputations take a hit that’s hard to recover from.

What this list really does is set the tone: efficiency is possible, but not at the expense of safety. If it works, Abu Dhabi gets faster trade, businesses cut costs, and consumers keep confidence in what ends up on their tables.

Not bad for what looks, at first glance, like just another line in the rulebook.
