Dubai has a plethora of awards on its shelf, and a new one recently joined the club. In January 2026, Dubai’s main airport officially overtook Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport to become the world’s busiest airport by seat capacity. For years, Atlanta had been reluctant to relinquish its top spot, thanks to its massive domestic network. Now, Dubai has stepped forward and rewritten the rankings.
DXB Beats Atlanta To Rank World’s Busiest Airport In 2026
According to data reported by Gulf News, the ranking is based on scheduled airline seat capacity across both international and domestic flights. In January 2026 alone, Dubai handled 5.5 million scheduled seats. Atlanta followed with about 4.9 million. OAG, the global aviation analytics firm, tracks these figures. Tokyo Haneda joined the rankings, making its name as one of the world’s top three busiest airports by capacity.
Record Passenger Traffic Fuels The Rise
Be it capacity or people moving through terminals, Dubai delivered on both fronts.
According to Dubai Airports, December 2025 closed with a staggering 8.8 million passengers. That’s up from 8.3 million the year before, and officially the busiest month ever recorded at the DXB airport.
A record-breaking 324,000 passengers were recorded on January 3rd 2026, which was followed by 322,000 travellers on January 4th. It hit a historic moment by recording such peak traffic on two consecutive days.
Why Dubai Works As A Global Hub
Dubai sits at the crossroads of East and West, making it a natural stopover for long-haul travel. In comparison to Dubai, Atlanta traffic is heavily dependent on domestic travel within the US. Unlike Dubai, it doesn’t have international connections from Europe, Asia, or Africa.
OAG measures how many seats airlines made available for sale, not how many people boarded, to list out the rankings. And right now, all signs point to Dubai staying firmly in demand.
