If your child is flying solo this summer, you’re not the only parent feeling nervous about it. Emirates says it’s preparing for one of its busiest stretches yet for its Unaccompanied Minors Service, with more than 3,500 children expected to travel independently over the next two weeks alone, right as Dubai’s school holidays begin.

Emirates’ Unaccompanied Minors Service: What Parents Need To Know

Over the past five years, more than 250,000 children have flown with Emirates using its Unaccompanied Minors and Young Passenger services. Most of them are aged 11 and under, and the busiest routes connect Dubai with the UK, Russia, Kenya, France, India and Egypt, a fairly telling snapshot of where Dubai’s expat families call home.

Who Needs The Service And What It Costs

Children aged 5 to 12 are required to use the Unaccompanied Minors Service and travel on an adult fare. It can be booked up to 24 hours before departure via Emirates LiveChat, phone, or any local office. Kids aged 12 to 15 can technically fly without the service at a parent’s discretion, but families who want the extra layer of support can add the Young Passenger Service for USD 50 per flight, subject to availability.

What Actually Happens On The Day

At DXB, families head to the newly renovated Unaccompanied Minors Lounge near check-in, where kids can settle in with PS5 Pro consoles, free Wi-Fi and snacks while waiting. A trained Emirates specialist takes over from there, staying with the child through check-in, security, immigration and priority boarding, right up to handover with the cabin crew.

Onboard, there’s the usual ice entertainment lineup: Disney, Marvel, and Harry Potter, plus complimentary toys and over 100 video games. Parents can even request dietary preferences, seating choices, and, if it’s a birthday, a cake with 48 hours’ notice. On arrival, another Emirates specialist walks the child through the airport until they’re handed over to whoever’s picking them up.

For connecting flights through DXB, the maximum wait time allowed is 8 hours, and kids aren’t permitted to stay overnight at a connecting airport unless an adult guardian is arranged and approved by Emirates in advance.

It’s a fairly reassuring system on paper, and for expat families juggling summer visits back home, that peace of mind is probably worth more than the fare difference.
