Etihad Rail Fast-Tracks Madinat Zayed & Liwa Station Openings To November 30

Etihad Rail just moved its own goalposts, but in a good way. Madinat Zayed and Liwa passenger stations, which weren’t meant to open until later, will now welcome travellers from November 30, 2026. The reason is simple: Al Dhafra’s festival season kicks off around then, and someone clearly decided visitors shouldn’t be stuck navigating desert roads to get there.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, directed the earlier opening during a meeting with Etihad Rail’s leadership at Al Nakheel Palace in Abu Dhabi. CEO Shadi Malak led the delegation, and the conversation apparently covered a fair bit: future Al Dhafra stations, joint projects taking shape in Al Sila’a, and where the national network goes from here.

Here’s What Makes The Timeline Interesting

Etihad Rail only started accommodating actual passengers in late June; the Abu Dhabi to Fujairah route launched on June 30. And already, demand has apparently outpaced expectations. That’s likely part of why officials are pushing to expand rather than wait and watch.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed also brought up the Mohammed bin Zayed City station, inaugurated by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. He called it a genuine milestone for the UAE’s transport ambitions, not just a ribbon-cutting moment. Nasser Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative Court in Al Dhafra Region, was also present at the discussion.
