Europe Issues Airspace Advisory For UAE, Qatar And Gulf Airspace As Regional Tensions Rise

Europe Advisory Gulf Airspace

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued an advisory for European airlines not to fly through the airspace of the Gulf Airspace, citing a “high risk” to civil aviation following renewed regional tensions.

Europe Advises Airlines To Avoid UAE, Qatar And Gulf Airspace

The advisory, issued as a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin on Tuesday, will remain in effect until July 29 unless reviewed earlier, and also covers the airspace over the western part of the Gulf of Oman. It applies to EU airlines operating under European aviation rules, as well as non-European carriers authorised by EASA to fly to, from and within the EU.

What EASA Has Recommended

According to the bulletin, affected airlines should avoid operating in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar airspace at any altitude and steer clear of the waters of the Gulf of Oman. Airlines have also been asked to continue monitoring official guidance from national aviation authorities as the situation develops.

Why Did Europe Issue An Advisory

EASA said the security situation in the region has grown more complex following repeated disruptions. EASA also noted that heightened activity might increase the risk of civilian aircraft being misidentified during military operations. Such activities could leave limited time for airlines to reroute.

The Wider Picture

This advisory adds to a series of similar bulletins EASA has issued in recent weeks, with separate advisories already in place recommending airlines avoid the airspace of Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. The UK Foreign Office has also recently updated its travel advice for the UAE, noting that the security situation remains fluid.

It’s worth noting that these are precautionary advisories rather than confirmations of incidents, and airport and flight operations across the UAE continue as normal. Travellers with upcoming flights are advised to check directly with their airline for any route or schedule changes and to follow updates from the UAE’s official channels and their airline for the most current information.
