The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued an advisory for European airlines not to fly through the airspace of the Gulf Airspace, citing a “high risk” to civil aviation following renewed regional tensions.
Europe Advises Airlines To Avoid UAE, Qatar And Gulf Airspace
The advisory, issued as a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin on Tuesday, will remain in effect until July 29 unless reviewed earlier, and also covers the airspace over the western part of the Gulf of Oman. It applies to EU airlines operating under European aviation rules, as well as non-European carriers authorised by EASA to fly to, from and within the EU.
What EASA Has Recommended
According to the bulletin, affected airlines should avoid operating in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar airspace at any altitude and steer clear of the waters of the Gulf of Oman. Airlines have also been asked to continue monitoring official guidance from national aviation authorities as the situation develops.
Why Did Europe Issue An Advisory
EASA said the security situation in the region has grown more complex following repeated disruptions. EASA also noted that heightened activity might increase the risk of civilian aircraft being misidentified during military operations. Such activities could leave limited time for airlines to reroute.
