Bangkok has revealed a new rule for airport authorities, which allows them to inspect checked baggage without the passenger’s presence. This rule comes into effect on October 16th, 2026. As a result, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman, which is in Bangkok, has advised Omani citizens to keep this rule in mind if they are planning to travel to the country.
Omani Embassy Warns Of New Baggage Rules
According to a new rule, the Thailand Civil Aviation Authority will now allow airport authorities to inspect checked baggage without the passengers present. Items that are prohibited include flammable materials and power banks, as mentioned in a report by the Oman Observer. If discovered during inspection, these will be confiscated without any right to claim them. Moreover, the inspection process will also be documented on video, and an official notice will then be left inside the baggage. So, the embassy has urged citizens to use internationally recognised TSA-approved bags and to avoid placing their valuable or important documents in checked baggage.
What Do The New Rules Say?
According to the new rules, the baggage will pass through initial screening, which will be through X-ray security screening equipment. In case there is suspicion of prohibited or dangerous materials being detected, then further inspection may be required. It can also be required in cases where the contents of the baggage cannot be accurately identified. In such cases, there will be additional inspection where the baggage may be opened in order to ensure that it does not contain any dangerous item.
So, basically, the authority will be able to examine the baggage without the passenger being present. They can also confiscate the item without any entitlement to compensation. They can even break non-approved locks if the authorities deem it necessary in order to complete the security.

Several Safeguards For Passengers
The new procedure includes several safeguards so that there is transparency and protection of passenger rights. There is monitoring, which allows baggage inspection procedures to be recorded by surveillance cameras. An official inspection notice will be placed inside the bag if it is opened. The passenger, however, does have the right to review the procedure if they feel any belongings are missing or if they have any concern about the process of inspection.
If you’re travelling to Thailand in the coming days, you might want to keep this development in mind.
