Dubai Customs Foil Attempt To Smuggle Rare Bear
As revealed by the Dubai Customs on its official account, X, the authorities ended up thwarting an attempt to smuggle a rare bear through the Dubai International Airport. An Asian woman who arrived in the country through the Dubai International Airport, upon inspection, was seen carrying the bear in her luggage. Her luggage had been flagged during routine screening after the inspection system had detected unusual contents. Officers then carried out a detailed manual search, which was in line with standard procedure.
What Really Happened?
During the inspection, as revealed in a report of the Gulf News, customs officers discovered a basket. This basket was concealed inside a suitcase, and it contained rare bears. These were being transported illegally. After subsequent questioning, the passenger stated that she had received the suitcase in exchange for a fee for delivery purposes. She was waiting for contact from another individual upon arrival before handing over. This is a classic example of how travellers are exploited in smuggling operations without being informed about the contents.

The Case Was Immediately Escalated
This case was immediately escalated, and Dubai Customs coordinated with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. A duty veterinarian then attended the scene to examine the animals, who were confirmed to be dead. The veterinarian also verified that these bears belonged to a rare and endangered species that is protected under the international conservation regulations.
As further revealed by Dubai Customs, it is continuing to develop its capabilities through investments in modern technologies. This achievement forms a part of its series of operations that affirm the authorities’ efforts, which aim to protect the environment and biodiversity. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the animals fall under the Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora regulations. The CITES governs international trade in endangered wildlife and plants, so that it prevents exploitation and ensures the survival of species.
