Recently, 20 rock formations bearing ancient inscriptions were discovered within the Soudah Peaks Project Area in Saudi Arabia. This was announced by the Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission in partnership with Soudah Development Company. It is being described as some of the oldest cultural evidence identified in the region, here’s all about the ancient art found in the area.
Rock Formations Bearing Inscriptions Discovered
20 rock formations, which bear ancient inscriptions, are believed to date back between 4,000 and 5,000 years. As revealed by the Saudi Press Agency, these offer a rare glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and environment of the early communities. Spanning more than 636.5 square kilometres, the project area includes the Soudah and parts of Rijal Almaa Governorate, which is in the Asir region.
The Rock Art Is Expected To Date Back Between 4,000 & 5,000 years
As it happens, the landscape as revealed by the researchers holds deep historical and cultural significance. Among the most notable findings these happen to be inscription, which is basically an ancient epigraphic script. It is set to be associated with the Thamud tribe, as mentioned in the Gulf News. The rock surfaces here are all set to feature carvings of animals. These are ibexes, hyenas and ostriches, along with there being scenes of hunters, dancers, palm trees, and weapons. Reflecting the aspect of daily life, ritual acts, and ecological conditions, these instructions do offer a significant insight into the communities that once lived here.

As the commission mentions, the discoveries confirm that Soudah and Rijal Almaa are long-standing centres of human settlement. There was also a cultural activity that played a vital role in the historical development of the region. Findings have emerged from a joint archaeological survey carried out between the two organisations.
This discovery is hardly surprising as Saudi Arabia is home to some of the most ancient inscriptions that give people an insight into the lives of people who lived in the region.
