After WHO Report, Saudi Arabia Announces MERS Situation Not A Cause Of Concern

Recently, a WHO report on the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus was released. However, the Saudi Deputy Minister of Health for Population Health Dr. Abdullah Asiri, has said that the rumour regarding this report has been somewhat misleading. Not to mention, it has been based on a misunderstanding. He clarified that the report is a routine periodic report, and it does not contain any exceptional indicators or warnings regarding any new outbreak of the disease.

Saudi Arabia Affirms MERS Not A Cause Of Concern

Taking to X, he mentions how the MERS infections have seen a sharp decline ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not to mention, it remains at very low levels. Moreover, he further went ahead to reassure the public that the health situation is stable and it does not happen to be a cause for concern.

Here’s What The Ministry Said

As further revealed in a report of the Saudi Gazette, the Deputy Minister of Health for Population Health also stated that the virus has not undergone any new genetic changes. It remains endemic in camels. Although there is a possibility of transmission in limited cases to people who come in contact with them, only if they don’t follow preventive measures. However, if the known preventive measures are followed, this can be avoided. As stated in the report, the WHO reports are for continuous monitoring and surveillance. Additionally, they do not necessarily mean a public health emergency.

Rumours Not Supported By Scientific Evidence

With the aim of enhancing health awareness and providing accurate information to the public, clarification has come from the ministry. Not to mention, the Ministry of Health has also affirmed that there is a continuation of epidemiological surveillance and the health investigation system. It is worth mentioning that there are several rumours circulating about the recent report. However, such rumours are misleading and are not supported by scientific evidence. The document released by the WHO is a routine periodic report. And such rumours are erupting due to the misunderstanding of the nature of the report issued by the World Health Organisation.
