It seems that Dubai is all set to get a brand-new Food District. Well, we are talking about the fact that DP World, on Thursday, January 22nd, unveiled its plans to transform the Al Aweer Central Fruit & Vegetable Market into the Dubai Food District. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Well, here’s all you need to know about it.

DP World Announces Dubai Food District

DP World announced its plans to transform the Al Aweer Central Fruit & Vegetable Market into what’s said to be the world’s largest and most advanced centres for food trade. Yes, the Dubai Food District, as revealed by the Gulf News, would go far beyond fruits and vegetables. You can expect this to be a one-stop destination for dairy, staples, speciality foods, and gourmet products. This would all be available in a single and connected space and would reshape how food reaches home, restaurants and even retailers across the UAE.

To Be Rolled Out In Phases From 2027 Onwards

All set to roll out in phases from 2027 onwards, the Dubai Food District will be double the size of the existing market. Yes, it would be expanded to 29 million sqft, as revealed in a report by the Gulf Business. It should be noted that the hub’s location would offer multi-model connectivity. So, this would allow producers and traders to connect to over 20 markets globally through the logistics of DP World.

Several Highlights Of The Upcoming Facility

But what does it mean for consumers? Well, it basically means quicker access to fresh and imported products. Additionally, with cold storage, temperature-controlled warehouses, the food processing facilities, and cash-and-carry options, it would mean a multitude of options for buyers. Additionally, they would also be a gourmet food hall, which would be designed to serve both businesses and the public. Truly a major upgrade from the wholesale-only model, it would cater to not just businesses but consumers themselves.

For those who didn’t know, the Al Aweer Market opened back in 2004. Although it supports over 2,500 traders, the new food district would preserve its central role and then expand its scale. With the plans to showcase the Dubai Food District at Gulfood 2026, as mentioned further in the Gulf News report. It would offer a look at how the project, which reshapes food trade and access in the region.
