GCC Updates

1. 4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Saudi Arabia

As mentioned in a report of the Gulf News, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. This occurred on Tuesday, as revealed by the National Centre of Meteorology at 2:11 UAE time. The depth of the earthquake is 50 k,m and the tremors were not felt in the UAE.

2. Sharjah Introduces Overpass For Cyclist Safety

Sharjah has introduced a major initiative, which aims to enhance cyclist safety in Al Bataeh. These overpasses have been designed in such a way that they completely separate cars from 24 km cycle track. This move comes under the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, who is the Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah. Besides overpasses, the directives also include installation of posts and short barriers along the track.

3. Fatal Accident Occurs On A Saudi Highway

As revealed in a report of the Gulf News, a fatal traffic accident claimed the lives of seven Kuwaiti Nationals. This occurred on a major highway, according to a major local outlet, as quoted by the Gulf News. The victims are said to be members of Kuwait’s Al Rashaida tribe.

4. Dubai RTA Launches Pilot

Dubai RTA has launched a pilot operation for cleaning traffic signals. This will be across Dubai with the help of drone technology, and the aim is to cut operational time. This will be cut by up to 50 per cent, and the drones would complete the cleaning of a single side in just three to four minutes. This would enhance safety and lower operational costs as well.

5. More Single-Use Plastic Items To Be Banned

Recently, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has announced the start of the second phase of Ministerial Decision No. 380 of 2022. An expanded range of single-use plastic products and bags will take effect on January 1st, 2026. This includes single-use items, such as cups and lids, straws, stirrers, cutlery (like spoons, forks, knives, and chopsticks), plates, and food containers and boxes made of Styrofoam.
