On Sunday, March 22nd, Dubai Roads & Transport Authority awarded a contract for the first phase of the project. This aims to turn the city into a walking city. Under this plan, the historic neighbourhood of Al Ras on the shores of Dubai Creek is going to be transformed. Here’s what the massive makeover project in Al Ras includes.
Dubai Walk Contract Awarded
Under the plans, Al Ras, which is a historic neighbourhood located on the shores of Dubai Creek, will see a massive makeover. As it happens, this neighbourhood is going to be transformed with 12 km of pathway, 5 km of cycling tracks, and there will be rejuvenation of 10 artistic spaces. As it happens, there will also be participation of Emirati and local artists, which will be in coordination with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
A Part Of The Dubai Walk Initiative 2024
As a part of the Dubai Walk Initiative 2024, the aim of this project is to transform into a year-round pedestal. However, the major makeover plans also include widening of the footpath; there would be more shading, extra seats, additional greenery, and misting systems. Through these measures, there would be relief from heat and provisions for recreational and fitness equipment. Not to mention, it would preserve the district’s historic character.
Project To Improve Links
The project would also improve the links between Al Ras and other areas, and this would be done by ensuring better access to heritage landmarks. This includes Al Ahmadiya School, Al Ras Public Library, Al Fahidi Fort, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, and Al Shindagha Historic District. The development also includes integration with 11 metro, public bus, and marine transport stations. However, the timeframe for the work or cost has not yet been disclosed by the authorities.
Plan’s To Support Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033
Playing the key role in strengthening the global competitiveness in Dubai, the plan is to support Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033. As it happens, the plan is also to transform Dubai into a pedestrian-friendly city and elevate the pedestrian safety standards while strengthening connectivity between different districts. It should be noted that the overall master plan includes the development and enhancement of 6,000 km of walking paths. The first phase is between 2025 and 2027. The latest phases will be delivered from 2027 to 2040.
With the plans underway for making Dubai a pedestrian-friendly city, you can truly expect that it will make life easier for people who like to explore the city on foot.
