Dubai’s food scene lost one of its quietly influential figures this week. Rajiv Meherish, the man behind Raju Omlet, passed away on Sunday morning after being unwell, according to a family friend who confirmed the news.
Dubai’s Iconic Raju Omlet Restaurant’s Founder Rajiv Meherish Passes Away
Meherish’s story doesn’t actually start with eggs. He moved to Dubai in 1980 and spent years selling media space for publications like Khaleej Times and Gulf News before eventually moving into publishing and government-linked projects. It wasn’t until 2013, decades into his Dubai journey, that he launched Raju Omlet, a retro-chic, egg-focused restaurant concept that started small and grew into a genuine homegrown brand with at least seven outlets across the city.
There’s a nice irony in how it all worked out: Meherish himself was vegetarian by birth. Building an entire restaurant chain around eggs wasn’t exactly the obvious move, but it clearly worked.
More Than Just Omelettes
What made Raju Omlet stick wasn’t just the concept; it was how it evolved. What began as a single-dish idea eventually grew into an all-day dining spot serving everything from vegetables and paneer to chicken, lamb and biryanis, catering to Dubai’s famously mixed, multi-national palate. The brand even found its way into a Harvard Business Review case study at one point, a fairly rare feat for a homegrown UAE eatery.

Dubai’s Business Community Pays Tribute
Tributes have been pouring in from across the city’s business circles, as per Live Mint. Veteran businessman Kamal Vachani remembered him simply as a humble, genuinely nice man. Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of Danube Group, credited Meherish with turning ordinary, everyday egg dishes into something people fell in love with, describing it as a legacy that will live on through the brand and the people it inspired.

Meherish had always talked about wanting to take Raju Omlet beyond the UAE and turn it into something bigger, a global brand built on very local, very personal beginnings. For now, Dubai says goodbye to one of its more understated food entrepreneurs, the kind whose restaurant probably fed you brunch at least once without you ever really clocking the story behind it.
