After being on a pause for quite some time, the Jeddah Metro Project has finally been revived. Yes, Saudi Arabia, as revealed in a report of Saudi Gazette, has revived the plans to develop the long-awaited Jeddah Metro. As it happens, it has also issued a preliminary design consultancy tender for the Blue Line of the project, according to a report by MEED, as mentioned in the Saudi Gazette report.
Jeddah Metro Project Revived In Saudi Arabia
The tender is supposed to have been issued in early January, and the consultancy firms have been given until March to submit the proposals. With the aim of renewing the push to advance the public transportation infrastructure in Jeddah, it is expected that the Blue Line may span approximately 35 km. It is expected to link the King Abdulaziz International Airport with the Haramain High-Speed Railway station. The line is being planned to include 15 stations.

Strengthening the connectivity between airport, rail services and urban areas, the plans for Jeddah Metro were first announced in the early 2010s. However, it was later incorporated into a broad public transport programme around 2013 to 2014. Not just the Blue Line, but the network is also expected to include the Orange Line, which would run along Al-Madinah Road and Old Makkah Road. The Green Line, which would serve the city centre, and the Red Line would connect the King Abdullah Stadium to Old Makkah Street through the major arterial roads.

This Marks The First Concrete Step Towards The Project
With the revival of the Blue Line tender, this marks the first concrete step towards restarting the Jeddah Metro Project. Going by the information that is published by the Jeddah Transport Company, the overall metro scheme spans over 161 km and features 81 stations and 197 trains.
