Here’s all you need to know about this update!

Al Estiqlal Square Inaugurated In Sharjah

As the nation celebrates the UAE National Day, the inauguration took place for the redeveloped Al Estiqlal Square on Tuesday. This inauguration coincided with the 54th celebration of Eid Al-Etihad. Sheikh Dr Sultan also unveiled a commemorative plaque of the 34-metre-high monument, which is at the centre of the square. It is topped with a seven-pointed star that symbolises the seven Emirates of the UAE. It’s worth noting that the monument serves as a prominent urban landmark, which reflects the historical and national significance of the site.

Four Plaques Detail Key Historical Milestones

It should be noted that this monument has four plaques, which detail the key historical milestones for the UAE. These are as follows:

  • December 2, 1971, which marks the formation of the United Arab Emirates after gaining independence from Britain
  • January 8, 1820 when the 151-year period of British influence began with the signing of the treaty.
  • July 22, 1932, which marks the establishment of Sharjah Civil Air Station, and also the abolition of the British military base in 1971
  • Creation of the British military base on the civil air station, which was contrary to prior agreements.

Imam Al Nawawi Mosque Also Inaugurated

The ruler of Sharjah took a tour of the Al Estiqlal Square to review the new fountains, which add dynamic appeal to the monument. He also inspected the landscaping, green areas, pedestrian pathways, and the newly installed lighting system. This enhances both the design and ambience of the place.

Additionally, 95 commercial signboards were also replaced and unified, while modern lighting highlights the aesthetic feature of the buildings at night. This project forms a part of a wider urban development initiative across Sharjah that supports cultural, social, and service facilities.

All of this is taking place while preserving the heritage character for residents and visitors in the emirate. It’s worth noting that Sheikh Dr Sultan also inaugurated the restored Imam Al Nawawi Mosque, which was originally built in 1995. This has now been renovated in Fatimid architectural style, and the reopening included the raising of minarets and the walls.
